Questions about Mustang
1a.
History
Mustang's president
and founder, Al Simmons, started Mustang in 1980. An engineer
by degree and training, Al has been in the motorcycle industry
for over 30 years. Under his leadership, Mustang has grown
from a small operation making just a dozen seats a day, to
now being one of the worldwide leaders in motorcycle seat production.
Al has traveled to every state and listened to thousands of motorcycle riders.
This, complemented by his years of riding experience, forms the basis of his
unique understanding of what riders need, and the essentials of seat design to
address these needs. |
 |
1b.
Why Mustang is “America’s Choice for Comfort”?
Mustang Motorcycle Products, Inc. is a world leader in the design and construction of motorcycle seats. Since 1980, Mustang has been proud of making the highest quality, most comfortable seats available and offering them at reasonable prices.
Mustang motorcycle seats
are designed for all-day riding comfort for both the driver and
passenger.
Every Mustang seat is made in the United States by true craftsmen who take
pride in transforming the highest quality, raw materials into a finished product--all
under one roof in our New England facility.
We, of course, recognize there are other seat manufacturers and that every
person's "bottom line" is different—literally, figuratively
and economically—that’s why consumers prefer different seats, sofas,
chairs, beds, etc. Mustang seats are preferred by motorcycle riders who want
comfort, quality and style from a company that firmly stands behind their products.
Q:
Why buy a Mustang seat?
A: When
it hurts to ride, it’s not fun anymore. Whether for you, your passenger
or both of you. A good seat can make every mile pleasurable. You should change
your motorcycle seat if you think about your seat when you ride.
Q:
What makes Mustang seats unique?
A: Mustang seats are designed using special
controlled-density foam, which is the basis for the comfort in
our seats. Mustang also builds a baseplate which aligns the spine
and places the driver at the proper riding angle, thereby relieving
back stress. We complement our engineering expertise and high-quality
manufacturing with first-rate customer service.
Q:
Why are “aftermarket” seats more expensive than
replacement stock seats?
A: Most motorcycle manufacturers invest the majority of
their time and money researching the bike engine and aerodynamic design
of their motorcycles--not
the seat.
A tremendous
amount of planning and design goes into preparing to produce a motorcycle
seat.
Next comes the tooling to construct the actual baseplate (how the seat
attaches to the motorcycle). Mustang engineers take pride in designing
a baseplate with
far greater strength than most stock pans. Baseplates receive black epoxy,
powder coating on both sides for complete rust-proofing.
Hidden inside each seat is the foam. First, a mold must be hand sculpted--carefully
contoured for support, posture and comfort as well as pleasing lines to complement
the particular motorcycle make and model. Then, a mold is made and we mix
the chemicals to concoct our own special Mustang recipe of liquid foam. After
decades
of experience, Mustang has perfected the right components for creating our
own controlled-density foam (cushion) for each particular seat thickness.
Finally, the pattern is hand-designed that will best suit the shape of the
foam and the flow of the motorcycle. Each cover is hand-stitched by an expert
seamstress at a real sewing machine.
Components are then hand-assembled, with the cover finally riveted (not stapled!)
to the baseplate.
Q: What should a customer look for when shopping for
a motorcycle seat?
A: Read the warranty. Fully understand the return policy;
how long is it? Does it cover the “break-in” period? Is there
a re-stocking fee? How does the seat mount? Do you need extra hardware?
Turn the seat over and inspect how the edge of the cover is finished: ragged
or
hemmed? Is the cover stapled or riveted to the baseplate? What maintenance
is required for the cover material? Most importantly: talk to your friends,
read reviews and comments! Look around and ask riders with similar bikes
about their experiences.

Questions about Sales of Mustang Seats
Authorized Dealers: Mustang
Seats are sold worldwide through franchised motorcycle dealers
and established accessory shops that have retail storefronts and
regular business hours. We also sell directly to a very few well-established,
large distributors of motorcycle parts and accessories who, in
turn, sell to motorcycle dealers and accessory shops. Mustang’s
policy is to not sell to strictly mail-order or Internet-only businesses.
Price: As
the manufacturer and prime distributor of Mustang seats, we print catalogs every year
showing the retail price for each seat. Although the large majority
of Mustang dealers sell our seats at our printed retail price,
each dealer or accessory shop can charge customers whatever price
he or she chooses.
Once we sell a seat to
a dealer on a wholesale basis, we have no control over the resale
of that seat. Some dealers do not buy directly from the Mustang
factory but, rather, buy from a distributor of Mustang seats. Again,
Mustang has no control over the price a distributor charges a dealer
nor how old the distributor’s seat inventory may be or what
condition it is in.
Buyers should always be
careful when “shopping prices” in catalogs or websites
that show one style of seat (while listing several different bike
models) and state “priced from $$$.” This price may
reflect the seat price for the least expensive model—not
the seat for your particular bike. Your seat may not even look
like the one in the picture. Web-sites and mail-order catalogs may not reflect current prices. Once an order is placed, a reseller may change price based on his current cost.
Inventory: Very few motorcycle shops stock more than a few seats because of the huge variety and cost investment. If a mail order or internet only business is selling Mustang seats, they may have some of our older production seats which they bought from a distributor. You may experience a delay receiving your seat due to shipping time from their distributor to them.
Customer
Service: Before
purchasing any item from a dealer, website or mail-order business,
the buyer should know how, where and from whom they can expect
follow-up customer service if they have a problem.
Mustang’s telephone numbers are on the bottom of every seat. Customers
can call during regular business hours and speak to one of our Seat Experts
for advice on seat installation, accessories, repairs or returns.
2a.
Purchasing
Q: Where can I buy Mustang seats and accessories?
A: Mustang seats are sold through all franchised
motorcycle dealers and established accessory shops throughout North
America and around the world. Mustang encourages you to visit your
local dealer who may already have a variety of Mustang seats on display
or can order one for you. If your
favorite shop does not yet have a Mustang catalog, they can still
call us with your order.
Talk to your dealer or contact us to discuss the
type and style of seat best suited for you. Our salespeople are available
during regular Eastern business hours to answer any questions. You
can also send an email to "Questions@MustangSeats.com";
you will usually receive a response within hours.
If time restrictions, travel distance or other factors make it inconvenient
to purchase a seat through a dealer, you may purchase products directly from
Mustang online by clicking on the "How
to Purchase" button. You can also call
us at 800-243-1392 (Monday-Friday, 9-5:30, Eastern Time) from anywhere in North America (includes Alaska,
Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands & Canada) or 860-582-9633 from
anywhere in the world.
Q:
Does Mustang offer discounts versus an authorized dealer?
A: No. Mustang sells products only at the suggested
retail price. If suppliers or dealers wish to sell our products
above or below the suggested retail price, they may do so. Mustang
does not compete with our dealer network on price. In addition,
dealers may or may not charge their customers for freight or
restocking fees.
Q:
How do I go about finding a local authorized Mustang dealer in
my area?
A: To find an authorized Mustang dealer in your
area, please call Mustang at 800-243-1392 (9:00am to 5:30pm,
Eastern time, Monday through Friday). We will personally discuss
your needs and give you information on dealers for your motorcycle
make in your area.
Q:
When does Mustang process my credit card charge?
A: Mustang charges the customer’s credit
card when the seat is shipped.
Q:
Does Mustang offer reduced-priced “scratch-and-dent” or
returned seats?
A: No. Mustang does not deal in damaged or used merchandise. If errors are made during the manufacturing process, we discard that particular component.
Q:
Will you buy-back my slightly used Mustang seat in order for
me to upgrade to another Mustang seat style?
A: Sorry, no. While we certainly appreciate
your business and loyalty, Mustang does not sell used seats nor
do we use components of used seats to reconstruct new seats.
However, you might try selling your slightly used Mustang seat
to a friend, a local club member or on-line in a chat room, a
club listing or on E-Bay, etc.
Q:
Does Mustang have a showroom I can visit in the Connecticut
office?
A: We regret that Mustang has no facility
to display merchandise or receive visitors in our Connecticut
office or manufacturing plant.
Q:
Does Mustang have a distributor in Europe?
A: Yes. Mustang Europe distributes to European
Union countries.

Warranty
All Mustang seats and
accessories have a one-year warranty against defects in material
and workmanship. Every seat is permanently labeled with a serial
number, our one-year warranty and our toll free telephone number.
Your warranty is automatically activated on date of purchase. If a product appears to be defective, please call Mustang to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization form (RMA). No returns will be accepted without an RMA. All returns must be carefully packed to avoid shipping damage; you are responsible for return shipping charges. Mustang will, at their discretion, repair or replace the defective portion of the seat or accessory and return it to you freight paid. Incidental or consequential damages or labor charges arising from or in connection with installation or use of a Mustang product are not covered by this warranty.

Returns
1. Return Policy for Seats
Purchased from Your Local Dealer or Other Supplier:
If you buy a Mustang seat from your local dealer or other supplier, the return
policy is strictly between you and your dealer or supplier. Mustang has no
control over the return policies of other businesses, dealers, or distributors, so please be sure to
ask your supplier about all the details of their return policy before you make
a purchase from them.
Some dealers may not
allow returns at all or they may charge a significant restocking
fee and/or handling fees. Your dealer may have purchased Mustang products from a distributor (rather
than directly from Mustang); the distributor may not accept returned items.
2. Return Policy for Seats Purchased
Directly from Mustang:
Mustang has been making comfortable motorcycle seats for over
25 years and we know that a picture of a seat can look good
in a catalog or on a website. A seat can also feel good just
out of the box or on a showroom floor for a minute or two.
You may buy a seat for looks--but you keep it for comfort.
The proof (as they say) is in the pudding and, with a motorcycle seat, this
means you have to ride 100 miles or more on it to really know how it feels!
If you read some of our hundreds of unsolicited customer comments on our website,
you will understand why Mustang offers the best deal in the motorcycle industry:
Ride It--You'll Love It!
If you buy a seat directly from Mustang (whether online, by telephone or fax), you
have up to 10 days after receiving the seat to request a return RMA. Just keep the original
box and be sure to keep the seat in perfect condition (no scratches, scuffs,
rips, etc.--as with any product you might need to return).
Any returns in less than new condition will be charged a 20% restocking fee.
If, for any reason, your new Mustang seat is not to your liking, call us
immediately (within 10 days of receipt) and discuss the nature of the problem
with a Mustang
customer service representative. No returns will be accepted without a Return Merchandise Authorization form (RMA). All returns must be prepaid and carefully packed to avoid shipping damage. We will send you a Return Merchandise Authorization form
that must be included when returning the seat.
You would then simply put the seat back into the original packaging and send
it to us via UPS, FedEx or the Postal Service. Per your instructions, we will
either exchange it for another style or credit your charge card for the price
of the seat.
Beyond the 10-Day Return Policy: Mustang will not accept a returned seat beyond our generous
10-day notification policy. (If
you have a "slightly used" Mustang seat, you may wish to sell it
to a friend, a local club member or online in an auction, a chat room, or
a club listing.)
Seats Damaged in Shipping: If you receive a seat that is damaged when
you open the box, it is your responsibility to immediately call the shipping
agent (UPS, the Postal Service, etc.) to file a damage claim. Be sure to keep
the box and all packing material, since these may be needed in filing a claim.
Please call us if you have more questions.

baseplates and mounting tips) can be found by returning to the home page
and clicking on the particular make and model of your bike.
This is an overview of Mustang seat styles and descriptions; styles may vary
slightly for different makes and models.
Studs, Conchos and Fringe
In addition to the specific styles which feature studs, conchos or fringe,
it is sometimes possible to special-order a seat with or without studs, conchos
or fringe. Please contact Mustang for details and additional charges.
 |
DayTripper™
Mustang's advanced
comfort technology has been incorporated into this totally new
style of custom seat. Ride low and look cool and still be comfortable
at the end of the day's ride.
|
|
Cobra
Style
The lean, low look. The Cobra style provides a clean profile while maintaining
comfort through molded, controlled density polyurethane foam. |
|
Fastback
Fastbacks are cut low to the ground with just enough foam to be comfortable.
The tapered rear section flows smoothly to the fender, yet has adequate padding
to still be used as a passenger seat. |
|
Custom
Squareback Style
A low cut seat for the driver and a squared off passenger seat make for functional
two-up riding. |
|
Regal
Duke Style
Soft pillow comfort with just enough folds and pleats to allow the cover full
freedom to flex and conform. The Regal style is offered in many seat versions.
Buttons are tightly
sealed with o-rings at the base. |
|
Vintage
Style
The classic look with simple, straightforward lines. Skirt around the front features
a braided edge trim. No conchos, no studs, no fringe. |
|
Studded
Style
Traditional in style, modern in comfort. Most Mustang studded seats feature a
skirt with braided edge trim, chrome studs, and leather-tied conchos. This style
is available in the original or Wide Touring versions, with or without leather
fringe. |
Although several Mustang
seats are sold as separate solos and passenger seats, most of our
seats that are built on a two-piece baseplate are sold as a set.
While it may be possible to purchase just one of the two pieces,
this is not recommended for several reasons. For example: Buying
the solo only, for instance, eliminates much of the
support for the driver’s back that is provided by the
front of the passenger seat on styles without a driver backrest. (Refer
to “Compatibility
with Stock” below.)
The price of the front
half (solo) of a two-piece seat is usually about 2/3 of the total
seat price, reflecting the greater percentage of materials and
labor
to make it. Please contact your dealer or Mustang for exact pricing
information.
|
Optional
Driver Backrests
Some styles of Mustang seats are available with a built-in, removable driver
backrest which offers more features than any other backrest on the market (see
3c. Removable Driver Backrest). The receptacle hardware is built directly into
the seat. |
Mustang also offers a Driver Backrest Kit that only fits with Mustang's One-Piece
Ultra Touring Seats for Harley-Davidson FL models or the stock, one piece-seat.
Driver Backrest Kits have the same features as Mustang's built-in driver backrests
(see 3c. Removable Driver Backrest). Kits will not work with solo seats or
with any other motorcycle make or model.
Q: What is the difference between
your Smooth and Regal Style seats? Which is more comfortable?
A: Both styles of Mustang seats use the same seat
foam on the same baseplate and each style provides equal comfort.
The outer covering of most styles are glued to the foam for a snug
fit. The cover of the Regal style, however, is gathered ("tufted")
and held down with covered buttons, this allows the seat cover to
attain the "pillow" look.
Q:
What is the difference between a pillion pad and a passenger
seat?
A: When referring to what a passenger sits on, a pillion
pad and a passenger seat are the same thing.
3b.
Colors
Q:
Does Mustang offer seats in different colors?
A: No. Mustang seats are available in black
only; we do not offer seats in any other color.
NOTE: Although all seats and accessories are black, they may
appear grayish on the website or in the catalog.
3c.
Driver Backrest
The more you ride, the more you realize that "the most comfortable seat
possible" means comfort for your back as well as for your bottom. Nothing
takes the fatigue out of riding more than having full back support and being
able to effortlessly adjust your lumbar support frequently. Whether sitting
in your living room, car or on your motorcycle, your back deserves the best
support possible. Mustang's fully adjustable driver backrest is the answer
to your riding comfort -- whether cross-town or cross-country!
|
Foam surrounds
the hardware to provide maximum comfort.
Nylon friction
washers and stop nuts keep the mechanism tight with smooth
operation. |
|
The
backrest post is notched allowing four easy "snap-in-place" height
adjustment positions.
Unlike
others, there is no need to use a wrench or remove the
seat. |
 |
|
When backrest is not in use, the receptacle's
slot is covered by a leather flap held tightly with a Velcro® closure
for a smooth, clean appearance. |
 |
Q:
Are Mustang’s driver backrests adjustable and removable?
A: Yes. Mustang’s driver backrests pivots to match
the angle of your back. It features a slotted post that is easily adjustable
to a variety of heights without the need for any tools. Additionally,
the backrest folds flat for easy mounting and dismounting. Simply lift
it up to remove the backrest!
Q:
Can a driver backrest be added later to a seat?
A: No. The driver’s backrest is the
built-in type and cannot be added to an existing Mustang seat.
The driver backrest
requires a seat that has a special base plate that houses the receiver
mechanism for the backrest post.
Q:
Are Mustang solo seats with driver backrests compatible with
stock passenger seats?
A: No, Mustang solo seats with driver backrests are
not compatible with most stock passenger seats because the passenger
seat would overlap with the backrest post and receptacle. Mustang manufactures
a passenger seat that is specifically designed to be recessed to avoid
any interference from the driver backrest.
Q:
Does Mustang offer the Wide Regal pillow style seats with a
driver backrest?
A: Mustang does not manufacture any Regal style seats
with a driver backrest (exception: Harley-Davidson FXR).
Q:
I want the full support that Mustang’s backrest offers
but I'm really tall with long arms. Will I have ample
room?
A: Most riders are satisfied with the standard
backrest post, but those who need more room from the handlebars
can opt for
an “offset post” that will set the backrest back slightly.
|
Leans you back 2" further with
all the features of our standard driver backrest.
Mustang's Offset Driver Backrest
Post, part #75099, is available for riders looking to move
back away from their handlebars and gas tank. This post replaces
the standard driver backrest post in all Mustang solo seats
that have the built-in driver backrest unit.
Offset post can be used with any Mustang solo
with the driver backrest slot. It can also be used with most
of Mustang's recessed passenger seats, but might interfere slightly
with the front end of other Mustang rear seats. Mustang's recessed
passenger seats come with a leather patch to help protect the
seat from the driver backrest adjustment knob. |
|
This offset post cannot be used
in any of the Mustang frame-mounted driver backrest kits that
are made for the Harley-Davidson® FLHT, FLTR and FLHR
models. It is not recommended for seats on which the driver
backrest is built into the passenger seat (Honda 1100 Sabre,
Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic or Nomad and Harley-Davidson® V-ROD)
Price for part #75099 is $25.00 |
Q:
Does an offset backrest post come standard with the purchase
of a seat?
A: No, the offset post does not come standard
on Mustang driver backrests (exceptions: Yamaha Road Star,
Harley-Davidson Sportster
and Honda VT1100 Aero & ACE). However, off-set
brackets are available for seats on most other models.
Q:
Can I order an offset backrest post?
A: Yes. If you decide you need
an off-set bracket after you have ridden on your new seat,
you can order
(Mustang
part #75099 for $25). Switching from the original to the offset post
is not difficult.
3d.
Passenger Backrest
Q:
Does Mustang make a passenger backrest that is built into the
seat?
A: No. Mustang offers an extensive line of sissy bar
pads to match all styles of our seats. These passenger sissy bar pads
backrests are featured under your specific bike’s make from the
Mustang Home Page. Mustang does not sell sissy bars, just pads for
sissy bars.
4.
Seat Construction
Mustang's President, Al
Simmons, insists that every Mustang seat is built to show bike
quality standards. Our seats will retain their looks with no maintenance
on your part--just years of comfortable riding!
Mustang believes that, with a well-designed seat, there is no reason to be
uncomfortable. You should always enjoy your ride--whether five miles or all
day. Mustang seats are meticulously designed so that the baseplate, foam and
cover components combine to make the finest, most comfortable seat possible.
All seat components are hand assembled at our New England plant to give you
the high quality seat that makes Mustang America's choice for comfort.

Baseplates
Mustang seats may feature
a single baseplate (both the driver’s seat and the passenger’s
seat are constructed on the same, single baseplate) or a two-piece
baseplate (the driver's seat is constructed on a separate baseplate
from the passenger’s seat). Both of the pieces on a two-piece
baseplate can be attached together for two-up riding or separated
to ride as a solo seat. Some Mustang seats feature a “two-piece
look” but are actually built on a single baseplate.
Mustang baseplates are constructed of either marine-grade fiberglass or steel.

4b.
Foam
All foam is compounded
and molded at our New England facility.
For a seat to be comfortable, "it's what's inside that counts".
The most important component of comfort is the seat foam--both the quality
of the
foam itself and its design. Each Mustang foam is formulated and cast to be
soft enough for comfort and resilient enough to stand up to those "thousand-mile" days.
Mustang has over 25 years of experience in compounding the right chemical mix
to create the best controlled density polyurethane foam for all-day comfort.
The foam has a density of approximately four pounds per cubic foot, depending
on the size and thickness of the seat. The foam must then be molded to the
correct shape to support your body at the best angle.
Our quality foam usually feels firmer than stock but is less firm than other
aftermarket seats. It will compress enough to mold itself to your body shape
within about 15 minutes of riding time--every time you ride. You do not need
a "break-in" period to be comfortable. Your 100th ride will be equal
to your 10,000th mile.
Mustang seats are known
for retaining their shape and support after years of use.
Q:
What is “split-foam” construction?
A: The term simply refers to the look of one style of
seats that has the appearance of being made from two parts (a solo seat
and a passenger seat) but which is really constructed on a single baseplate.
The foam for seats with this look has been split in the middle to give
it a two-piece appearance.
Q:
Does Mustang use gel in the seats?
A: No, Mustang does not use gel in our motorcycle
seats. We manufacture our seats with the very best controlled-density,
polyurethane foam possible. To put it simply, gel does not compress—it
just changes its shape. Foam compresses (what you need your Mustang
seat to do) while gel displaces (imagine a tube of toothpaste).
Gel may be suitable for a very high-pressure application in a limited area
such as bicycle seats or soles of shoes. However, to be fully supported and
all-day comfortable, your posterior needs and deserves the cushioning of Mustang
foam.
4c.
Cover Material
 |
All covers are
designed, cut and individually sewn at our New England facility.
Covers are made
of the highest quality expanded vinyl available. They have
the appearance of black leather but the durability and resistance
to the elements that exceed original equipment standards
for motorcycle seats. All seams are sewn twice for strength.
The bottom edge that holds the cover to the base plate is
hemmed where the rivets hold the cover to the baseplate.
The edges
of our seat skirts are finished with braid. Regal styles
are tufted with covered buttons which are double-tied with
four cords, not two. Mustang seats do
not lose their buttons. |
Q:
Why does Mustang use vinyl seat covering?
A: Vinyl has the durability to resist all weather
conditions better than other materials. It does not fade and
requires practically no maintenance.
Q:
Does Mustang offer leather seats as an option?
A: No, we do not make any seats in leather; all Mustang
seats are covered with top quality expanded vinyl for durability
and easy care.
4d. Studs, Conchos and Fringe
Decorative studs are chrome-plated
brass, not steel, and will never rust. Our custom-made conchos,
heavy die cast zinc, not a thin stamping and are hand-tied with
genuine leather straps. Our fringe is vat-dyed leather so that
the color goes all the way through.
If you would like to purchase
additional studs or conchos please contact Mustang.

Seat Repairs, Recovering & Customization
5a.
Repairs
Mustang’s one-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship is affixed to the bottom of every seat.
Repairs
Under Warranty: Regardless of where you purchased a Mustang
seat, we will directly honor your warranty. Mustang will repair
or replace a defective seat under warranty at no charge (free
inspection, free repair or replacement, free handling and free
shipment back to the customer). While many dealers are very
helpful, we have no control over whether a dealer will assist you
with repairs to damaged seats, whether or not they are under warranty.
Repairs
Outside Warranty: Mustang offers complete repair
service for current model Mustang seats at very reasonable
rates. Regardless of where you purchased your Mustang seat,
we will inspect your seat and give you a free estimate of the
repair fee. Then, regardless of whether you choose to have
us perform the repairs, we will ship your seat back to you
for free.
5b.
Recovering
Q:
Will Mustang recover a seat?
A: Mustang will recover (replace the top, vinyl covering)
of a current model Mustang seat. We do not recover any of our Mustang
discontinued seats nor do we recover any stock or other aftermarket seat.
If your Mustang seat is NOT under warranty, the cost to recover a seat is about
one-third to one-half of the current price of the seat. If the seat form (inside
cushion) also needs to be replaced, the price may be two-thirds the current
price of the seat.
We will be happy to inspect your seat and provide you a free estimate. You
or your dealer must contact Mustang prior to sending in any seats for repair,
recover or inspection.
5c.
Customization
Q:
Does Mustang customize seats?
A: No. Mustang does not customize seats. We manufacture
our seats with a “custom” look using prototype designs (by
Mustang) to precisely fit bike specifications. This is a tremendously
involved process and therefore would be exceptionally expensive (not
to mention time consuming) for an individual to have Mustang create a “personalized” seat.
Q:
Can you make seats shorter/longer or higher/lower?
A: No. Mustang manufactures each seat according to its
corresponding make/model specifications. Mustang seat baseplates use
the stock mounting points; therefore, they are not adjustable for different
seat heights.

Specifications
Q:
How does Mustang determine the width of a seat?
A: The width is measured across the widest point
of the seating area.
6b.
Compatibility with Stock
Mustang seats are primarily
designed so that all components lend to the overall comfort of
both rider and passenger. On many styles, particularly solos without
the removable driver backrest, the front of the passenger seat
provides a large measure of the support for the driver's back.
Buying only the solo eliminates that added support.
While your riding comfort is our primary goal, we also take great pride in
the elegant design of our seats. Every Mustang seat is meticulously constructed
to enhance the lines of your particular motorcycle. Your Mustang seat will
make your riding more comfortable and your ride more attractive! We also offer
accessories such as sissy bar pads, tank and fender bibs to complete the coordinated,
custom look on your bike.
Regardless, since our seat components are built for precision fitment to each
other, it is always necessary to inquire regarding each individual item’s
compatibility with stock.
Q:
Does Mustang put the driver at the same height as the stock
seat?
A: Mustang’s seats put the driver at the same height
as the stock seat did when it was new. However, we use much firmer, higher
quality foam than the stock seat. Depending on the age of your stock seat
and how much the foam has deteriorated, you may sit about .5” to
1” higher.
Q:
Are Mustang solos and passenger seats compatible with the stock
solos and passenger seats?
A: With very rare exception, Mustang solos and passenger
seats will mate only with their correct Mustang halves. On those Mustang
halves that will mate with stock, the vinyl and stitching patterns are
close to the stock seat.
Q:
Are Mustang solo seats with the built-in driver backrest compatible
with a stock passenger seat?
A: No, Mustang solo seats with driver backrests are not
compatible with a stock passenger seat. The overlap of the passenger seat
is not complementary with the backrest post and receptacle. However, Mustang
does manufacture a recessed passenger seat specifically for this purpose.
(The recessed pad is designed with the necessary clearance to avoid any
interference with the driver backrest shaft or adjustment knob.)
Q:
Will Mustang sissy bar pads fit on stock sissy bars?
A: With very rare exception, Mustang sissy bar pads will
fit on standard size stock sissy bar systems.

Seat Mounting/Installation
Most Mustang seats are
designed to install just like your stock seat--using the same mounting
points and hardware as your original seat. It usually takes about
fifteen minutes to remove the stock seat and install your new Mustang
seat.

Care & Maintenance of Seats and Accessories
8a.
Wet Seats
Whether due to rain or
washing the bike, motorcycle seats, backrests, tank and fender
bibs get wet. These Mustang products are not damaged in
any way by getting wet--or even staying wet for a day, a week,
or a month.
For the outside of a
seat or pad to be waterproof, it would have to be a molded plastic
cover, like some OEM seats, with no stitching in the cover. Any
seat or pad that has an upgraded, upholstered cover with stitched
seams (like most aftermarket seats) can not be totally impermeable
to water. Water will tend to leak through the stitching (see "Washing,
Waxing & Treating" regarding waterproofing below). If
the seat or pad does get wet, it will need awhile to dry out--just
like your car seat if you left the window open during a rainstorm.
(Some riders choose to use a seat rain cover to prevent their seat
from getting wet.)
Mustang has been designing
and manufacturing motorcycle seats since 1980. We, ourselves, mix
the chemicals to make the foam for every seat. Our foam will not
be damaged if it gets wet in a rainstorm or while washing the bike.
It simply has to dry out, at which time it will return to its original
resilience.
However, since no one
likes to have a "wet butt," you might want to minimize
the intake of water along your seat seams. Al Simmons, President
of Mustang Seats, suggests that the best and easiest way to achieve
this is by using Protect All™ or any commercial spray wax
(such as Pledge™). Applying Protect All™ will not only
help seal the seams, but is also excellent for cleaning, polishing,
waxing and treating all vinyl seats (see below: Washing, Waxing,
Treating).
Another method to minimize
wet seats is to apply clear (not white) paste wax with your finger
just along the stitched seams. Rub the wax into the seam and wipe
off excess. This will help seal the seams and reduce water intake.
(Do not wax the entire seat since you do not want to sit on a "slippery" seat.)
Our pillow top "Regal" style
seats feature a small rubber gasket under each covered button to
prevent water from seeping through the button holes in the cover.
8b.
Washing, Waxing & Treating Seats and Accessories
Mustang seats and accessories
are made of the highest quality vinyl and will retain their looks
for years without any extra care.
Mustang seats can be washed with any mild, non-abrasive detergent. Mustang
recommends Protect All™, a do-it-all type of cleaner that cleans, polishes,
waxes, treats and protects every surface. Protect All’s water repellent
Carnauba Wax Formula provides durable protection against all elements. The
quality of carnauba wax, incorporated into the formula, is largely responsible
for providing durable protection. Simply spray, wipe, and polish dry for a
beautiful, durable, lasting shine.
Protect All’s™ anti-static property
is ideal for treating vinyl to a clean, dry natural appearance. It leaves NO
oily film to attract dust and dirt. With regular use, Protect All’s highly
effective UV absorber additive helps to protect all surfaces by absorbing the
UV light rays and blocking them from reaching the finish.

Cuts, Scratches or Scuff Marks
As with any upholstered
product (such as couches, chairs or car seats), there is a possibility
of cutting or tearing the cover material. Please contact Mustang
directly and one of our seats experts will provide you with the
best possible advice about your particular situation. (Most local
upholstery shops do a very good job of repairing vinyl.)
If your seat has been scratched or scuffed, try gently applying a small dab
of black paste shoe polish on the affected area. Allow it to dry completely,
then buff out with a clean soft cloth. If you have any questions, please contact
Mustang and speak to one of our seat experts.
9. Accessories

Sissy Bar Pads
Mustang offers an extensive
line of sissy bar pads to match all styles of our seats. These
pads for your sissy bars are listed in our website under your specific
bike’s make and model (accessed from the Mustang Home Page).
Mustang only makes pads for sissy bars—we do not sell sissy bars. Please
see your local motorcycle dealer or accessory shop to purchase a sissy bar.
Q:
Will Mustang sissy bar pads fit stock sissy bars?
A: With very rare exception, Mustang sissy bar
pads will fit on standard size stock sissy bar systems.
Q:
Is a Mustang sissy bar pad compatible with the Cobra
sissy bar?
A: Mustang sissy bar pads are ONLY compatible on Cobra "Standard" sissy bars.
Mustang’s full line of sissy bar pads for Harley-Davidson fits all models
of bars with die-cast, bolt-in inserts. They will fit all Harley-Davidson and
aftermarket bars with welded insert plates or with no center insert at all
(see “Accessories, Harley-Davidson”). Exception: Sissy bar pads
for Road King are listed specifically under the “Road King” section,
not under Accessories.
A perfect match to a Mustang seat, all sissy bar pads have carpeted backs with
chrome brackets and screws. All 9” tall pads have a threaded center hole
for blind mounting plus optional top bracket. All pads come complete with chrome
brackets.
Pads are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 6” to 12” in
height and 6.5” to 12” in width as well as three styles: Vintage
(plain), Studded (with studs and conchos) or Regal (pillow top).
9b.
Tank Bibs
Mustang tank bibs are
individually patterned to fit each make and model of motorcycle
with no gaps around the edges. They are felt-backed to protect
paint and are perfect for covering existing scratches. They add
a complete, customized look to your bike. Made from waterproof,
synthetic leather, they will retain their looks and last for years
without curling. Sewn with a braided edge trim in a plain style
or with studs and conchos to complement Mustang seats.
Q:
How do Mustang tank bibs attach to the tank?
A: Tank bibs mount under the tank console or
attach with Velcro® or ties at the front of the tank. The
rear of the bib utilizes the tank bolt and attaches with Velcro® ties
to the frame.
9c.
Fender Bibs
Mustang fender bibs are
individually patterned to fit each make and model of motorcycle
with no gaps around the edges. They are felt-backed to protect
paint and are perfect for covering existing scratches. They add
a complete, customized look to your bike when riding solo. Made
from waterproof, synthetic leather, they will retain their looks
and last for years without curling.
Q: How does Mustang's fender bib attach
to the fender?
A: The fender bib attaches under the rear end of the
solo (front) seat and uses the rear fender screw, or Velcro®, to
attach to the fender.
Q:
Is Mustang’s fender bib easily removable for passenger
seat replacement?
A: Yes. Since Mustang’s fender bib uses either the
rear fender screw or Velcro® to secure it, simply remove the screw
or Velcro®, to remove the bib and replace the passenger seat.
9d.
Sissy Bar Pad Covers
Mustang offers a limited
selection of covers that will fit the stock sissy bar pads. These
covers provide a cost-effective solution in completing a custom
look on your bike when you purchase a Mustang seat or seat cover. Installation
is quick and easy.
9e.
Seat Covers
Mustang offers a full
selection of studded or studded and fringed seat covers to fit
stock seats. These covers provide a cost-effective solution in
completing a custom look on your bike.
Q: Is a seat cover installation difficult?
A: Not at all. Simply remove the existing seat
and slip the Mustang cover over the seat. The cover stays firmly
in place due
to the strong elastic cording sewn into the hem of the seat cover.
Every cover is custom-made to an exact pattern for your make,
model and year
so covers will fit snugly, with no wrinkles.
9f.
